Winners of the prestigious Veneer Tech Craftsman's Challenge have been named with the overall winner awarded for his Art Deco Style Music Box.
The winners in the annual competition are:
- Grand Prize winner: Art Deco Style Music Box, Dennis Zongker, Zongkers Custom Furniture
- First-time entry winner: Marquetry of Cubes Ladies Desk, Steven Lash
Category winners:
- Student Design: Tenement Cabinet, Kiya Vega-Hutchens, Vermont Woodworking School
- Architectural Woodworking: Journey from Cuzco, Spider Johnson, Tesoro Design
- Cabinetry: Cabinet doors for Mile High House in Loveland Co, Timothy Schefter
- Furniture: Marquetry of Cubes Ladies Desk, Steven Lash
- Marquetry: Grizzly-399, Wayne Delyea, Wayne Delyea Furniture Maker
- Specialty Products: Tuca, Chico Margarita, Ophicina São Francisco
The 2023 Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge was sponsored by Veneer Technologies and Certainly Wood. The Grand Prize winner receives $1500 cash and other category winners receive $500.
A veneer credit from Certainly Wood of $2,500 goes to the Grand Prize winner, and veneer credits from Certainly Wood of $1,250 each go to the category winners.
All awarded entries will be showcased in FDMC Magazine, among trade groups, and on WoodworkingNetwork.com.
Judging the entrants
The panel of three distinguished judges in this year’s competition were Marc Adams, Ana Rothman, and William Sampson.
- Marc Adams, founder of the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, has been woodworking professionally for more than 40 years.
- Ana Rothman is vice president of sales and estimating at Montbleau & Associates in San Diego, California, and has worked for the last 15 years as a liaison to the Architecture and Design community.
- William Sampson is a lifelong woodworker and previously served as a judge for the Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge in four separate years. He is currently the editorial director of FDMC magazine and Woodworking Network.
